An inspection and a signed certificate from a licensed perito electricista. Banks, insurers, permit offices and buyers ask for one. Kevin inspects, writes down what he found, and either signs it or tells you exactly what has to be corrected first — and he can do the correcting.

The meter base is the steel box on your outside wall that the utility's meter plugs into. On this coast, salt gets into them and corrodes the lugs where the conductors land. Kevin repairs them, replaces them, and re-does the service entrance around them.

On the outside wall of your house there is a round meter sitting in a steel socket. That socket is the base de contadores — the meter base. It is the exact point where the utility's wires stop being the utility's problem and start being yours.
Everything from that box inward belongs to the property owner: the box itself, the lugs the incoming conductors land on, the conduit, and the seal that is supposed to keep weather out of all of it. Most people have never looked at theirs.
On this coast the thing that kills them is salt. It works into the seams, lifts the paint, and corrodes the aluminium conductors where they are clamped down. A corroded connection is a loose connection, a loose connection runs hot, and heat is what melts a meter base — usually taking the meter, the service conductors and a patch of wall with it.
Any one of those is a reason to have it looked at, not a reason to wait and see.
